The Technology
All of the material chosen for SONIC BOOMS was recorded with COLOSSUS™, a new state-of-the-art digital audio system. It is a discrete 4-channel 16 bit PCM proprietary technology that was commissioned in 1984 by producer Brad S. Miller. Colossus™ was invented by Louis Dorren, who also created the national technical standard for 4-channel (quadraphonic) FM broadcasting. In conjunction with COLOSSUS™, the MS-4, a proprietary 4-channel discrete surround microphone is employed. Both of these items are currently being introduced to the audio, broadcast, communications, scientific and film sound arenas as a means to advance the potential of digital audio to yet new horizons.
Each of the selections were recorded in the discrete 4-channel COLOSSUS™ digital format and then re-mixed into a 2-channel stereo digital master. The COLOSSUS™/MS-4 microphone combination ensures an accurate and phenomenal sound stage keyed to the way that our own ears perform in real life situations. The COLOSSUS™ A-D (analog to digital) conversion technology maintains imaging and does not color or alter the incoming program in any way, regardless of the source! Instruments remain where they are supposed to be; the soundstage does not collapse to the center; there is no graininess or other coloration introduced into the program by the COLOSSUS™ digital format. The output signal (program) is a mirror image of the input signal, period! In order to further ensure that no degradation to the original COLOSSUS™ digital recording can occur, the COLOSSUS™ digital data stream is transcoded to the standard compact disc digital format via a Harmonia Mundi Acoustica digital standards converter. This transfer remains entirely within the digital domain...untouched by human hands, so to speak.
Philips, the originating inventor of the compact disc technology, has published a 4-channel CD protocol. This means that discrete quadrophonic or 4-channel compact discs are possible in the very near future. Aside from providing discrete surround sound effects for major motion picture formats such as IMAX, Mobile Fidelity Productions is committed to providing its 4-channel COLOSSUS™ digital master recordings on compact disc when players are made available. Public pressure and demand will encourage this to occur much sooner!
